This position requires a skilled construction professional responsible for pouring, smoothing, leveling, and finishing concrete surfaces for structures like sidewalks, floors, pads, foundations, and more.
Duties & Responsibilities
Reinforcement & Forms
Direct the installation of rebar, mesh, or other reinforcement materials and ensure forms are securely set and aligned to specification before pouring begins.
Sub-grade Preparation
Prepare and compact the sub-grade (gravel, sand, or soil) prior to pouring to prevent shifting or cracking and ensure a stable, level foundation for the concrete.
Pouring & Leveling
Ensure even distribution into forms, strike off and level fresh concrete to the proper grade using straightedges, scrapers, and screed boards for a uniform surface.
Floating
Use bull floats and hand floats to drive aggregate down, draw paste to the surface, and smooth out imperfections to achieve a consistent, workable finish.
Surface Finishing
Use hand trowels, power trowels (riders or walk-behinds), and edgers to achieve the desired surface texture — smooth, broom, or non-slip — based on project specifications.
Control Joints
Mark and cut control/expansion joints using hand groovers or concrete saws to prevent random cracking as the concrete cures, ensuring structural integrity and clean aesthetics.
Decorative & Curing
Apply chemical hardeners, color pigments, or decorative stamps for architectural concrete work. Apply curing compounds, water sprays, or plastic sheeting to maintain proper moisture and temperature levels for optimal concrete strength development.
Patching & Repair
Patch voids, chip away excess material, grind down high spots, and fill blemishes or honeycombs in newly exposed concrete surfaces to deliver a clean, professional result.
Position Requirements
The candidate for this position must have a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in concrete finishing.
The ability to perform physical labor in various weather conditions, stand for long periods, handle heavy tools, bend, kneel, and the ability to follow instructions.
Strong hand-eye coordination for precision tool handling and achieving flawless surface finishes.
Basic understanding of concrete mix designs, setting times, curing, and how weather affects setting rates.
Effective communication skills to work cohesively with crew members and foremen.
You must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug and alcohol tests, as well as a criminal background check.
Willingness to strictly adhere to all OSHA and company safety guidelines. A High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Valid Class D driver’s license. American Concrete Institute (ACI) Flatwork Finisher certification is a plus but not required.
